First, what we are really talking about!

Cadmium

Cadmium is a naturally occurring element found in the earth's crust. It is absorbed by plants through their roots. The amount of cadmium in a cacao bean is directly related to the soil it grows in its age, volcanic activity, and natural mineral composition.

Lead

Unlike cadmium, lead is rarely absorbed from the soil. Instead, lead contamination typically happens after harvest during the drying, fermenting, and transportation processes when the beans are exposed to dust and environmental pollutants.
